Focusing on Men’s Health

men's health

When it comes to general health, there are gender differences.  While men face many of the general health issues that women also face (heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, depression), men also face some gender-specific health challenges.  Compared to women, men are more likely to:

  • Drink more alcohol and consume more tobacco
  • Engage in risky behaviors
  • Not see a doctor for regular check ups

That last one really rings true, doesn’t it?

Seriously, most men should get regular checkups and be on watch for these maladies:

  1. Alcohol use
  2. Cardiovascular disease
  3. Depression and suicide
  4. Diabetes
  5. Erectile dysfunction
  6. Injuries from accidents
  7. Liver disease
  8. Prostate cancer
  9. Respiratory disease
  10. Skin cancer
  11. The flu and pneumonia

While some are specific to men (numbers 5 and 8 above), the others impact men differently than women. Depression and suicide are less likely to be acknowledged and skin cancer rates are almost twice that of women.

Whatever the case, prevention and being openly aware of your health and conditions will ensure you live a happy and healthy life.
